Moses Znaimer is a bit of a legend in Toronto. Always on the cutting edge Moses brought the unique style of CITY TV to life and is now going after the “Boomer” market or as he calls it “Zoomer.” At the end of October there is the ZoomerShow – a Lifestyle Expo and Consumer Show for those 45 and over.
Moses will be curating an art show called “The Last Taboo”. Znaimer claims that a whole generation is becoming invisible as doors close on the expression of individuality, sensuality for as he says aging is,
“the topic we don’t discuss openly, the thing that happens to other people, behind closed doors. In deference to this last taboo, people of age have been denied their right to sensuality, to adventure, to any unconventionality that can’t be fondly smiled at by a condescending universe. In a way, they have become an invisible demographic.”
The Taboo of AGING may be alive and well in our culture as evidenced by the commentary on Twitter, but for Boomers, the real place to battle restrictive beliefs about old age is in the space between our ears.
Everything we observe in nature tells the story of a cycle of growth, decline and renewal…such as the four seasons, the evolution of a tree from seedling to compost, and we come to equate age with ending and the ultimate taboo – death. The Boomer generation has always done it “our” way and it is time to give some conscious intentional thought to how aging will be different for us.
On the painting “What’s on Your Horizon?” flanking a Twitter stream are a life drawing of a contemplative 60 year old, and a painting of the word ACCEPT. This word holds the key. It is not a surrender, it is the freedom in opening and not resisting. Change is inevitable…accept and ask “What do we want to do NOW given these changes?”
As well as adoring the glory of sunsets, I wake every morning to glimpse the sunrise out my bedroom window. It occurred to me that there is a moment in time where you cannot tell one from the other. It is the colours of the sun on the horizon that inspire me to embrace this season with a passion and purpose that fits who I am now – the sun rising on something new.
